An initiative of the Shutter team to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ethereum, the Time Capsule is an application allowing users to seal a memory, a thought, an image (...) using cryptography.

Just like physical time capsules that get buried to be rediscovered years later, the Ethereum Time Capsule will be decrypted in the future.

Wait, Ethereum?

Ethereum is a blockchain : an alternative, collaborative system to share data and make transactions on the internet, without relying on centralization.

In May 2025, I was commissioned by the Shutter team to design the UX flows and visual presence of this community project, meant to be launched 6 weeks later at the biggest web3 conference in Europe.

Wait, Shutter?

Shutter is an encryption protocol that shields data from being read by the wrong person at the wrong time, only revealing it when it is deemed safe.

What is Shutter, you ask?

visual identity

A word about
visual design

For this time-sensitive project, we wanted to keep elements of the Ethereum branding at the forefront, to be easily identifiable by the community.

We therefore opted to use the official color scheme, and stayed relatively sober regarding our use of extra graphic elements.

Personas and stories

Defining the Users

The Ethereum Time Capsule is a community project that gathers most of its users during EthCC, the Ethereum Community Conference (France).

Our users are people who work in the space and understand

the lingo already, know how to use a wallet, and will have an appreciation of the smart encryption protocol used to

facilitate it.

Informed by our experience, we created three personas to help guide the UX development, and dozens of user stories to widen our scope.

User journey

Finding the right balance between security and usability

In this project, we aimed at limiting the clicks by synthesizing information to its essential, while keeping the user informed about the process and its steps from start to finish.

Our goal is to limit friction to a minimum in what is still a developing ecosystem.

Indeed, the decentralised ethos means that shortcuts are limited. The typical web3 user is currently more solicitated than in web 2.0, where security gets delegated to a central entity and the back-end can be forgotten.

Designing for a

vibe-coded dApp

One challenge I encountered in this project is that it was going to be vibe-coded, by a non-developer, within a week of launching.

Vibe Coding is about using AI to write code for you,

by describing what you wish to do in human language. It can be useful for fast prototypes like this one.

So I had to think about how to help my coworker, and the AI, understand the design.
This meant being very deliberate and careful about how I group and name UI elements, not leaving any gap for interpretation.

iconography

Suggesting Encryption, visually.

Entries to the Time Capsule are presented as card elements.

Only the text is encrypted using the protocol, but since images serve as a teaser to the card’s content, they get a visual treatment indicating the status of that entry.

To suggest this encryption, I used an iconographic system I had designed for Shutter two years prior.

It uses blurring, pixelisation and Floyd-Steinberg dithering to distort images in a way that renders them unreadable beyond vague shapes.

This iconographic system refers to the glitches of the private TV channels our parents didn’t subscribe to, the privacy pixelisation deployed on Street Views, and the patterns of security envelopes.
